A stark reminder of the danger on the roads across the county was brought to the fore again after another dark week on our roads saw three men lose their lives in two separate accidents.
Kinlough native Paul Connolly (41) became Leitrim’s latest road victim after he lost his brave ten-day fight for life in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin over the weekend. Mr Connolly suffered severe head injuries when his car was involved in a single vehicle accident near the village of
Lurganboy on September 5.
On top of a record county final attendance last Sunday week, Leitrim GAA this year has seen the biggest club championship gate receipts to
date.
If the packed attendances at club games through- out the county this season was an indicator of healthy times for Leitrim GAA, then the record attendance of 4,000 people at the recent county fi nal is surely a sign of an organisation that is going from strength to strength.
Indeed, so far this year the GAA are heading for a record year as the club championship gate receipts are up on previous years.
When you add in the fact this year’s terrible summer weather wasn’t exactly conducive to getting one out of the house and down to the park, then the results so far, say a lot about both the strength of the county organisation and the quality of games on offer.
Growing concerns about health and safety issues for school children in the congested Ballinamore PPS school vicinity will see local councillors investigate what can be done to safeguard students safety.
The Ballinamore Parents Association, who chaired the local meeting about the school, said there were fears that the proposed widening of the bridge at the entrance to the town would create fears for the safety of children attending the nearby secondary and primary schools. They
insisted that the new school should be built before the bridge is remodelled. Chairperson, Maureen Martin, read out a letter received from, Noel Brett CEO of the National Road Safety Council, saying that the best solution to the problem would be the building of the new school that would take children out of the immediate danger area.
There was a large turnout at the Bee Park Centre Manorhamilton last Thursday night for Leitrim County Council’s annual Housing Estate Awards.
Now in its fourth year, the aim of the Scheme is to recognise and publicly acknowledge the excellent work of Residents Associations throughout Leitrim in the upkeep of their estates. The scheme also aims to bring neighbours together and nurtures a sense of pride and community spirit.
One of Leitrim’s biggest housing estates, Townspark in Carrick on Shannon scooped a number of awards on the night including the Large Estate award and was the first winner of the ‘Best Green Estate’ award.
