Noel scores for GOAL

January 25th, 2008

This year’s annual GOAL Mile held in Bornacoola GAA grounds on New
Year’s Day raised a staggering €18,232-87 – the highest per capita in
the country.

Organised by Bornacoola native Noel Mahon the annual event, now in
it’s fourth year, attracts support from all over the county and
beyond.  Speaking after receiving the cheque, Karen O’Shea, daughter
of Goal’s founder John, said she was overwhelmed by the response of
the Leitrim people.

“When you consider the population base of Leitrim the amount
generated by this year’s run was the highest raised nationally on a
per capita basis.

On behalf of GOAL I want to express our gratitude to Noel and all
those who contributed in any way.  Without their commitment GOAL
would not be able to continue in it’s work of ensuring that the
poorest of the poor and most vulnerable in our world have access to
the fundamental needs and rights of life,” she added.

For his part Noel Mahon also praised the generosity of all the
participants and donors. “It really is gratifying to see the effort
people put in to this particular fundraising drive.

With all the demands on people’s time and money Leitrim people and beyond have,
once again, shown their concern for others less fortunate than
themselves”, he said.  Noel had a special word of mention for the
celebrities who, each year, take time out to support the event.
“Even though the Christmas period is the busiest time of the year for
them, they make that extra effort to lend their support.  It really
is appreciated.”
