Tragedy on Leitrim’s Roads

September 20th, 2007

A stark reminder of the danger on the roads across the county was brought to the fore again after another dark week on our roads saw three men lose their lives in two separate accidents.
Kinlough native Paul Connolly (41) became Leitrim’s latest road victim after he lost his brave ten-day fight for life in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin over the weekend. Mr Connolly suffered severe head injuries when his car was involved in a single vehicle accident near the village of
Lurganboy on September 5.
The popular welder and farmer is survived by his father Jimmy, sisters Mary, Anne, Carrie and Clare and his brothers Gerard, Seamus, John and David Mr Connolly’s tragic death came only days after a horrific three-car collision on the N4 just outside Carrick on Shannon on Tuesday morning claimed its second victim.
Kilglass native Brian King (18) died in Sligo General Hospital on Wednesday from his injuries sustained in the collision the day before. The first victim, Polish national Zbigniew Marek Zeranski (44), died at the scene of the crash.
Mr King, who worked as an apprentice electrician, is survived by his parents and two sisters.
Former Masonite employee Mr. Zeranski is survived by his wife Marzena, sons Bartosz and Mikosz and daughter Irmina.
Despite its perfect surface and wide lanes, the particular stretch of the N4 where Tuesday’s tragedy occurred has been the scene of a number of fatal accidents in recent years.
Following a relatively quiet summer in terms of serious road accidents, the last month has been memorable for all the wrong reasons.
On August 24, Glencar father of five Pat Callaghan died after being struck by a car while there have also been a number of other serious non fatal accidents throughout the county since the start of September.
Speaking about the recent spate of accidents a Garda spokesman said that it shows that no matter how well you know a particular road, motorists should remain vigilant to the potential dangers.
The Leitrim Post extends its sincere sympathies to the families of all the deceased.
